Traditional Wood Fire Workshop
The annual Traditional Wood Fire workshop led by Hiro Tashima runs each Spring. Depending upon the size of a piece, each student can bring 3 – 5 unglazed bisque pieces to the Ceramics Lab the weekend before the kiln is fired. The firing begins on a Saturday with loading the wood and feeding the fire until the kiln is brought to 2300 degrees where it holds. This process requires round the clock feeding of wood into the kiln to maintain temperature.
Students will learn how wood type, air flow and placement can modify the colors of their ceramic piece, making no two pieces the same.
- Bring the already bisqued pieces on Saturday, February 24, loading is at 9 a.m.
- Saturday, March 2 starting at 9 a.m. the kiln is fired and students sign up for 6 hour shifts, round the clock until Sunday, March 3 at 7 a.m.
- Saturday, March 9, 9 a.m. – noon the kiln is unloaded, detailed clean up, and pieces can be taken home
